Zone
Jakobine Engel made ZONE when it was not permitted to film any East German border areas. To capture her imagery, Engel opened the door of the subway car and filmed while the car was moving. Each image was then copied four times, which created a unique, nearly solarized photographic effect. Bernauer Straße – Alexanderplatz – Jannowitzbrücke – handrails – stairwells – closed off entrances and exits – colors – timelessness – abandonment – still-stand – no mans land – unexpected – unsolved – tolerated.
