Private Century: With Kisses From Your Love
Marie and Josef met at the grammar school in the Czech city of Tabor. Josef was the son of the renowned Tabor photographer Ignác Šlechtl and in the environment of the family studio, Marie also became an accomplished photographer. The loving relationship of Josef and Marie can be felt in the first shots they took. In the late 1940's, Josef and Marie rebuilt the photographic studio, which they had inherited from his father. Their tasks also included looking after a large photo archive.
Josef and Marie felt that they had their luck in their hands. In the early years of communist rule, they managed to largely ignore politics in their lives, focusing on their work and love instead. However, politics caught up with them. First, their studio was nationalized, later a trial was staged against Josef, because the communists expected to find compromising materials in the family photo-archive. Their story is accompanied by the affectionate correspondence between the imprisoned Josef and Marie. It stands for the strength of their love in times when political despotism frequently ruined people's lives.
