Peter Zach's documentary portrays 'temporary' Berliners, including renowned artists and DAAD grant winners such as literary Nobel prize winner Imre Kertész, composer Arvo Pärt, and director and realeyz.tv blog author Andrew Horn.

The film depicts those who came and stayed and those who passed on through – artists who report on their life, work and their personal experiences. It accompanies the artists those places in German capital that fascinated and inspired them and their work.

THE CITY NAMED DESIRE recounts stories from the forty-plus years of post-war history, from the days of the Cold War to the arrival of new Berliners after the fall of the Wall.

The various “villages” found in Berlin, each with their own special atmosphere, are introduced and depicted along with the personal stories. The film interweaves the lives and stories of internationally renowned artists into a kaleidoscopic image of Berlin. These are the stories of constraints and freedom, of flight and yearning. They are miniatures of world history set in a place that has learned to flaunt its difference to the rest of the world.
