Resisting the Empire
What do dykes, Asian Americans, mothers and fathers, corporate lawyers and the relatives of soldiers called up to serve in the Gulf have in common? They and many others from all walks of life turned out for anti-war demonstrations after the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Did the corporate mass media adequately cover this spontaneous mass resistance to the war? No. Did Paper Tiger? Of course.
One month after the invasion in Iraq, Paper Tiger Television completed this episode which is critique of president Bush's dreams of a new empire - the 'New World Order' – and the way the media presents war. It focuses on the under-reporting of anti-war efforts and features live footage of the student walk-outs and demonstrations that drew a huge cross section of the general public.

About the Film
The show
The show also points out how war is both glamorized and justified by those who “think in terms of military solutions”. It questions why “experts in international law, human rights, and in the tradition of conflict resolution” get almost no airtime. It also criticizes the mass media as a “subset of the corporate culture that is ... a choir of cheerleaders who are pretty much cheering on US official policy.” (Steve Rendall, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting)
Paper Tiger shows images of the resistance movement that mainstream media suppress.
The show interviews
grassroots organizers from DRUM, Peace Williamsburg, The Green Party, Corporate Lawyers Against the War, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, Colombia Social Justice, Labor against the War, Riot Grrls NYC, Nodutdol, High school students, a Long Island resident and father of four, and other New York based organizations.
“It's a shame that as an American citizen, you can't … trust the government's media, so hopefully you guys will get the word out and see what the majority of people in our country are really saying: stop the war. (Demonstration participant) “Dissent is patriotic” (placard)
