Niyamgiri - You are still alive
The Niyamgiri region in eastern India is a wooded mountain range and forest reserve where the tribal people of Dongria Kondh have lived for thousands of years. The mountains and especially Niyam Raja are sacred places. The mountains are also valuable to mining companies, who exploit the district for bauxite, a mineral used to manufacture make-up and nuclear weapons. The mine and refinery pollute the environment and make the water undrinkable. The natural lifestyle of the native inhabitants is threatened.
Since 2008, Amnesty International and the people of Dongria have worked closely together to prevent an expansion of the mining and refinery operations.
