Milltown, Montana
Milltown, Montana
Milltown is located in Western Montana where the Blackfoot and Clark Fork Rivers meet.
Here timber was processed using hydro-power and electric power supplied by the Milltown Dam. Recently the dam and hydro-power plant have been demolished and the timber mill shut down. Toxins and heavy metals from mines in upstream Butte and from a copper plant in Anaconda leached into the river. The river carried the toxins straight to a water reservoir and contaminated the earth below.
In attempts to renaturalise the landscape, the contaminated sludge (estimated at 14 million truck loads) is now being excavated and shipped upstream.
MILLTOWN, MONTANA's composed cinematography and impressive sound collages explore this magnificent and endangered landscape.
