The Scar
It ran straight through parts of the inner city, encircled and isolated West Berlin. and turned it into an island in the middle of the former GDR (East Germany). Twenty years after the fall of the wall, THE SCAR looks in remembrance at the 156 kilometer long no man's land that turned West Berlin into an island in the middle of the former GDR (East Germany). The 'antifascist barrier' (official GDR term for the wall) was a 70 to 500 meters wide forbidden zone with mines and barbwire enforcements to protect the socialist state from a possible Nato invasion... Burkhard von Harder, a filmmaker and fine artist, traces (counterclockwise and in real time) the precise perimeter of the old wall border by camera and helicopter. This documentary begins and ends at the Berlin Schönefeld airport and also documents the on-going healing process of the once-divided city.
