Private Century: Daddy and Lili Marlene
Karl Saisser was a successful farmer. He had three daughters. Lili was the eldest. Beautiful and vivacious, she fell in love with a young doctor from Prague and spent several happy years with him. Daughter Eva remembers the years they spent together in Velichovky and Prague to be the happiest of her life, even though they took place during World War II. Those were also the times when Eva became very fond of the wartime hit “Lili Marleen”, which she associated with her mother. However the sweet life in Prague so charmed Lili that she became increasingly alienated from her family. Eva turned her attention to her father whom she loved dearly and never called anything but “Daddy.” The end of the war and the arrival of communism brought more turmoil into Eva’s life. It was even more dramatic than during the war.
“Richly evocative and intimate, the episode is enlivened by snapshots of a family trip to Nazi Berlin in 1934; home-movie footage of a playful but revealing burlesque farce; and erotic images of the vivacious, but ever self-absorbed, Lili.” (MoMA PS1)
