The students of the master class at Rio de Janeiro’s most famous samba school, the the Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Portela, are older now and have amassed plenty of experience. With decades of music cursing through their veins, they are Brazil’s keepers of samba’s secrets. Superstar Marisa Monte takes a lead role in this documentary by encouraging Rio’s most famous samba musicians to play pieces never before been recorded and at risk of fading into oblivion.

From Brazil

Berlin’s “Haus der Kuturen der Welt” kicked off the program “Première Brasil”, an exciting series of films curated by the director of the “Festival do Rio”, Ilda Santiago. Not only are these good films, but we also don’t get a chance to see films like these very often. Latin America is woefully underrepresented in German cinemas. We’re working on filling this gap.
